DEFENDING SUPER PRO CHAMP HOWARD WINS FIRST RACE OF SEASON AT ATLANTA DRAGWAY By Tim Glover Because rain won last week's first Summit ET series event last week, tonight's race, held in conjunction with the NMCA / NSCA Hot Rod Power Fest, became the first completed race of the year at Atlanta Dragway. Although women are the definite minority in drag racing, the last three bracket categories contested today featured a female in each final. Another female, Annette Summers, won the top NMCA / NSCA Hot Rod class, Pro Street, in the rain delayed Florida final. Because the Moroso Hot Rod event was rained out a couple of weeks ago, the promoters completed the Florida race during the Saturday qualifying session at Atlanta Dragway. Summers beat Hank Hill with her '68 Camaro by .017 seconds at the finish line, running 6.75 to Hill's 6.78. Defending Super Pro track champion Bad Brad Howard continued his streak today with a Super Pro win against Thomas Bell. Friend Jim Mayfield and Howard stayed up all night working on his brand new '02 Miller dragster, changing out the oiling system. Their work was rewarded with a win in the car's very first race (it had four time trials prior to today). Howard's clutch .506 react and close .01 over 5.10, 127.49 took the win light. Bell's '00 Undercover dragster barely broke out with a 5.03, 137.20 (5.04 dial). Donny Brown Jr. ('95 Spitzer dragster) won his way all the way to a semi-final finish. Howard said he wasn't even going to race the car tonight because of the oiling system problems, but Mayfield came over and helped out, making his win possible. Jesse Hicks' Pro car engine was sitting on the workbench, so he raced his wife Tina's '67 Buick Special in Sportsman, getting the win light against Cindy Williams, who had the honor of competing in the DRUSA Footbrake Allstars Invitational with her '74 Challenger last year. Hicks' reaction time advantage helped him in the double breakout affair. Hicks turned in a 13.16, 101.81 (13.17 target), while Williams went a little further under with an 11.75, 112.50 (11.78 dial). Dale Anderson ('68 Chevy II) was the lone semi-finalist. Harold Wilson from nearby Winder defeated his son Michael in the Trophy Street semi-finals, then took the win against Jodee Lee in the final in her first final round appearance. Wilson's reaction time advantage in his '74 Nova made the difference. His car turned in a 14.27, 84.91 (14.12 dial). Lee's '00 Mustang was also off the mark, running a 14.69, 95.14 (14.55 target). Michael Wilson ('01 Silverado) took home the semi-final trophy. Because this weekend's event was a non-points race, the two Jr. Dragster classes were combined tonight. Seven year veteran Kelly Moore (15) took on Cody Martin (13) in the Jr. Dragster final, earning her first win of the year. Martin actually had a little reaction time advantage, but his car discovered a little more ET down track, and broke out with an 8.95, 70.42 (8.99 dial). Moore's machine went 8.70, 72.73 (8.64 dial). Ashley Dumas (15) won the semi-final trophy. DISCLAIMER: The information contained in this communication is confidential and may be legally privileged.
