Book Description: Super Stock takes a look at what was, in the 1960s, the most popular class of drag racing: factory Super Stock. It traces the evolution of the cars, the engines, the rules, the personalities, and many of the teams, from Super Stock's beginnings in the mid-1950s through the 1960s and the era of the Super Stock 409s, Ramchargers, 421 Pontiacs, and 406 Fords. It would make a great gift for anyone who loves super stock racing. (March 19, 2002) I had the pleasure to talk to Larry Davis on the phone recently about his book Super Stock: Drag Racing the Family Sedan. Mr. Davis is 60 years old and a veteran fireman of 33 years. He has written 70+ books on military aviation and he is a Korean War buff. Larry began drag racing in 1960 in D/Stock and competed with a series of Chevrolets until 1970. The book was based on his personal collection of 2-3,000 color slides taken while competing at various drag races. He told me that he used to take photos while not busy racing his car. Several other photographers allowed Mr. Davis to use their photos in the book. According to Mr, Davis, it was quite an ordeal to get the book published (even for someone who already had so many books published!). He finally succeeded and after several years of work the book made it to print. I believe that after you see the book you will agree that it was worth the wait! Dr. Marvin T. Smith and I are in the process of writing a book on the history of Atlanta area drag racing and I have had the opportunity to talk with "Dyno Don" Nicholson and Hubert Platt ( "The Georgia Shaker" ). Both of these living legends have purchased copies of the book and are very satisfied with Mr. Davis' work! This is one book that I think every drag racing fan should have.- David Dilbeck
