EVENT: Summit ET Series race at Atlanta Dragway

VANDERGRIFF WOWS CROWD WITH TOP FUEL DRAGSTER DEBUT AT ATLANTA DRAGWAY

In addition to the Summit bracket racing they were expecting, fans visiting Atlanta Dragway were thrilled tonight when they discovered Chris Vandergriff's Hedman Hedders Top Fuel Dragster making license passes.  Vandergriff, who won the 2001 Lanier Raceway Truck Championship, debuted his Vandergriff Group machine this weekend. He expects to finish his last two license passes Sunday. He made four partial passes Friday and Saturday, and finished Saturday with a straight as a string 5.14 second pass.

"John Boy" Smith just bought his 2000 Horton Dragster this past Wednesday, installed his motor and transmission, worked out a minor technical bug, and was rewarded with a Super Victory tonight at Atlanta Dragway. The car was initially running 5.12s, until he discovered the scoop plug was never removed. Fortunately, he earned a bye run, which allowed him to run it out the back door. Smith met Jonathan Anderson in the final, and took the win with a 5.00, 137.20 on a 4.99 target, when Anderson's Undercover dragster barely broke out with a 5.397, 126.77 (5.40 dial). Smith's car was done for the day after the final when the battery expired. Henry Snelgrove became the lone semi-finalist with his '98 Bos dragster.

Cindy William's husband, Gerry, was given all the credit tonight for helping her win Sportsman class. "It was a lucky night. If it hadn't been for him (Gerry) I wouldn't have gotten past the first round," Williams added. She met the "Pa Paw's Toy" '85 Mustang piloted by Mack Everett in the final, and although Everett had the reaction time advantage, William's earned the victory when her '74 Challenger broke out less, with an 11.70, 111.67 (11.71 dial). Everett's machine broke out with an 11.67, 111.39 (11.73 dial). Bill Boomhower ('65 Belvedere) was the semi-final finisher.

Steve Marcum celebrated his first victory tonight in Trophy, capping it off with a perfect .500 reaction time in his '00 Dakota. Marcum has been racing a little while, finishing in the finals before, but took top place tonight with a .500 aided 15.48, 87.04 (15.53 dial). His opponent, Jerry Haney made it easier when he lit the red light by leaving just a tad too early. After realizing he had lost, Haney eased his '01 F-150 through the traps with a 23.42, 49.50 (16.49 dial).

Two former Motorcycle champs faced each other in the final, with "Jay Bird" Rhyne taking the win tonight. Although Rhyne's '81 Kawasaki was a bit off pace, he too earned an automatic victory when his opponent, Joey "Chain Drive" Rutledge left the starting line too early, resulting in a foul start. Rhyne put a 19.74, 93.56 (12.27 dial) on the scoreboards, while Rutledge's Katana was closer to the mark with a 12.45, 107.15 (12.40 dial). Greg Winn ('76 Kawasaki) and Steve Bishop (Kawasaki) were the semi-final pair.

Former Division Two champ and Young Guns Motorsports racer Matt Gillen (10 years old) scored his best performance this year in 8-12 Jr. Dragster.  Gillen has been struggling this year, and made it to the semis last week, where he was defeated by Harvey Snelgrove. Gillen returned the favor this week by defeating Snelgrove in the semis tonight, and went on to take the win after the car belonging to his final round opponent, Lauren Turner (11), broke, due to a clutch bolt coming out. Turner also runner upped during the last Summit race. Gillen ran his Valvoline Jr. Dragster out to a good 9.08, 72.00 (9.02 dial). He thanked his mom, dad and Valvoline for all their help. Harvey Snelgrove (10) was the semi-finalist.

Thirteen year old Jake Sealey moved up to the older Jr. class, and won his first 13-17 Jr. Dragster event with his Tecumseh powered dragster. Sealey met former Rookie of the Year Kelly Gray (15) in the final, and scored the win when Gray broke out with an 8.964, 71.89 (8.97 target). Sealey went on to a close 8.39, 73.65 (8.37 dial). Heath Snelgrove (14) and Lloyd Shanks, Jr (17) were the semi-final pair.

Sixteen year old High School Class racer Todd Mayfield sold his Jr. Dragster last November and is currently helping his dad Rick to build a fast Vega. Tonight he scored his first "big car" win in High School Class with his street car, a '69 Camaro. Mayfield met another experienced former Jr. Dragster racer, Matthew Bates, and received the automatic win when Bates went red. Mayfield ran 8.69, 79.79 on an 8.73 dial, while Bates turned in an 11.68, 60.00 on an 11.94 dial. Ashley Dumas (16) and Joseph Satterfield (16) finished in the semi-finals.
