Don Young
In Memory of Don Young. On September 22, 1985, Don Young's life and racing carreer were cut short in a crash at the IHRA Fall Nationals in Bristol, Tennessee. Young, a native of Carrollton, Georgia, was the 1984 IHRA Quick Rod champion. In 1985, he was competing in the new Top Sportsman class and, at the time of his death, had a large enough points lead to give him the championship in that class. I saw Don race many times in the late seventies and early eighties. His early model Corvette could be seen anywhere the big money was being paid. In 1978 I saw him racing at the Bracket Nationals at Rockford Dragway in Illinois. I remember that quite often Don would run the Corvette with mufflers on, making for an unusually quiet race car. Don was a very soft-spoken man, but fiercely competitive. He was one of my racing heroes and I will always miss him. -- Wayne Holland Rest In Peace, Don, and thanks for all the memories!
