New! Open House at South Georgia Motorsports Park

South Georgia Motorsports Park, Cecil, Georgia (near Valdosta), held an open house on Sunday, March 28. Hundreds of racers and fans turned out to see the progress on the track and to enjoy displays, hot dogs, and cokes. Tim Pafford, track manager, was amazed with the fan response. He expected about 200 people, but many times that number attended. As Mr. Pafford said, "I've seen less people at races." At the drivers meeting, Mr. Pafford patiently answered all questions until everyone left. He should consider running for political office. It looks like South Georgia Motorsports Park will be a racer and fan-friendly place. NHRA Division 2 director, Bill Holt, was also present to answer questions. The racers were particularly interesting in checking out the starting lights.

The track will have a points system, and the points winner over the approximately 14 race schedule will win a new trailer and cash. Big payouts are planned, and the competition should be fierce.

Construction at the track continues. The grandstands were up, the VIP boxes were framed in, and the tower and the concession stand appeared to be complete. The lighting system is in place, and the timing system is up and running. About all that remains for the drag strip portion of the track is the actual asphalt paving. Mr. Pafford said that if they had had two more days, that would have been finished as well. Over half of the drag strip is concrete, and the concrete work is complete. Work continues on the half-mile speedway portion of the park, scheduled to run ASA events. It will open in a few months.

Drag strip test and tune sessions are scheduled for April 16, 17, and 23 with the first race scheduled for April 24. The first race will feature blown Pro Mods. BEE THEREEEEE.
