NHRA FRIDAY RECAP
Star/G2 Racing, McBride Part Company, Collis to Ride in Houston Posted Thursday, April 15, 2004 by DavidDilbeck
Americus, Ga., April 14, 2004 – Six-time NHRA Pro Stock Bike Champion team owner George Bryce of Star/G Squared Motorsports announced today that the team and rookie rider Angie McBride have decided to go their separate ways, effective immediately.
“Angie and I tried to work out a suitable contract that would work for all parties concerned,” said Bryce. “Unfortunately, we were unable to agree on some issues, and felt it would be best to terminate our relationship. I wish Angie the best and hope she does well in whatever she plans for the future.”
George Smith of S&S Cycle, Incorporated, Bryce’s G Squared Motorsports partner said, “I know that George Bryce and Angie McBride worked hard to get ready and put a deal together. We’re disappointed we couldn’t pull it off. Angie has great potential and I wish her well.”
McBride, who came from the Outlaw Pro Street series, has expressed an interest in eventually returning to the NHRA.
“I have dedicated my adult life to motorcycle drag racing and made many sacrifices to accomplish personal goals such as a championship in Outlaw Pro Street. I regret that Star Racing and I could not work out the details. I’d like to give a special thanks to everyone at Star Racing, George Smith and everyone at S&S Cycle and Snap-On tools for supporting me. The NHRA is a wonderful racing organization and they will see me in the future. I wish with all my heart it could have worked,” stated McBride.
Even with today’s announcement, Bryce emphasized that the Star/G Squared entry would be competing at this weekend’s O’Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston, TX, and announced that Fred Collis would be handling the riding responsibilities at Houston Raceway Park.
“We have sponsors that expected to see us in Houston, so there was never a question as to whether we would be there, it was simply a matter of who would be on the bike,” stated Bryce. “At Star Racing and G Squared, we race and develop engines and racing products, that’s what we do. I called Fred Collis yesterday afternoon to see if he would race for us at Houston. Fortunately, he was available, and I’m sure he will do a great job for us.
“In addition, George Smith and I will continue to develop our 4-cylinder engines and work diligently with S&S Cycle to bring our S&S powered V-twin to NHRA POWERade competition.”
For Collis, this marks a welcome return to the motorcycle on which he won one race in 2003, posting a Top Ten finish in his first full season of NHRA competition.
“Racing is my passion,” remarked Collis. “I went to the Gatornationals as a spectator this year, but almost left after I saw the first round of qualifying on Saturday, because it made me sick to know that I could be out there doing a good job.
“I really never wanted to leave at the end of last season but at the time, there was no way I could continue racing. There have been some major changes in the Star Camp this season and I’m honored to have the opportunity to come back.”
Smith added, “We’re very pleased to have Fred back in the fold. He did a good job for S&S and G Squared last year on the Tribute Bike Project and we’re getting closer to track time with the S&S Pro-Stock V-Twin. This will be an exciting year for the NHRA POWERade series.”

Atlanta Dragway Results by Tim Glover Posted Monday, April 12, 2004 by DavidDilbeck
RACE DATE: April 10, 2004 FROM: Tim Glover EVENT: Summit / Snap-On ET series event at Atlanta Dragway in 2004
RACERS GET READY FOR UPCOMING BIG RACES AT ATLANTA DRAGWAY (Commerce, GA - April 10) Three husband and wife teams came to Atlanta Dragway preparing for future races, in three different categories. Fram Top Fuel racers John Smith and Rhonda Hartman Smith brought their Top Fuel dragsters today to prepare for an upcoming NHRA National event in Texas and the Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, GA, which will be held May 13-16. During the day the Hartman-Smith team made single passes in each car. After dark, they thrilled the spectators with a side by side pass, with Rhonda going 4.621seconds at 320.97mph to beat John's early shutoff 4.830, 262.69mph blast. Carole and Gary Parker brought their Modular Motor Mustangs to the track to get ready for next week's Fun Ford Show, and Atlanta Dragway regulars Gerry and Cindy Williams brought their pair of '73 and '74 Chargers to race in the bracket race, with Cindy in Super Pro and Gerry in Sportsman. Pat Musi's Pro Modified '57 Chevy made some six second, 210mph plus passes, as there is the upcoming NSCA Hot Rod Nationals on April 30 - May2. A father and son team also had a good evening, with father Ray LaCount winning Super Pro and son Preston LaCount making it to the semi-finals in 8-12 Jr. Dragster.
Former Super Pro champ Ray LaCount said it seemed like a thousand years since his last win, but definitely enjoyed getting the Super Pro final round win light with his '77 Vega Wagon against visitor Christopher Anderson from Ft. Valley, GA. Anderson actually had the starting line reaction time advantage, but gave LaCount the win when his dragster went .004 seconds too quick, breaking out with a 5.276, 125.67mph pass (5.28 dial-in). Lacount's Vega turned in a race winning 5.91, 118.44mph on a 5.89 target. Steve Adams ('78 Malibu Wagon - Buford, GA) was the lone semi-finalist. LaCount had help from friends Gary Adams, Scott Dickerson, Jeremy Ramsey, Wilton Baxley and Ricky Baskins, who helped Ray while he was racing and taking care of his son, Preston in the 8-12 Jr. Dragster class.
Greg Allen from Anderson, SC is no stranger to the Sportsman class winner's circle, and took the win when he broke out less in his '80 Camaro than his final round opponent Clif Simmons ('73 Dart Swinger - Dawsonville, GA). Allen broke out with a 10.56, 128.03 mph (10.58 dial), but then got the win after long time racer Simmons ran even further under his dial in time of 13.97, posting a 13.92, 95.73 mph pass. Andy Schaefer's semi-final round appearance became expensive when his car ('72 Cutlass - Flowery Branch, GA) broke. The other semi-finalist was Andrew Wheeler ('74 Charger - Loganville, GA).
Mel Abney, the 2003 Trophy Street track champion, overcame engine and transmission problems that have been plaguing his Cumming, GA based '67 Camaro this year and took home the winner's trophy tonight after defeating Mike Newby from Marietta, GA, who finished in the finals for the third time in four races with his show quality '69 Chevelle. Although both racers actually had a red light, Newby was the first one to go red (leaving the starting line before the timer starts), which cost him the race. Abney's car was great, turning in a 13.49, 104.44 mph pass (13.48 dial). Newby's car was close, running 13.78, 97.01 mph (13.80 target). Rob Hogue ('84 Monte Carlo SS - Loganville, GA) and Josh Harris ('98 Mustang - Toccoa, GA) were the semi-final finishers. Abney said he was still chasing a fuel problem, but added that at least the problem was consistent.
Commerce, GA racer Eric Duncan, a.k.a. "Buford Heavy" earned his second win in as many races in Sport Compact. Tonight he faced the very fast 2004 Neon SRT-4 piloted by Jeremy Hayes from Maysville, GA, but used a better reaction time to take the win with his 200,000 plus mile '97 Cavalier. Duncan used the brakes a bit to slow his elapsed time to 19.35, 57.25mph (19.05 dial). Hayes' machine carded a 14.39, 97.84 pass (14.11 dial). Kevin Davis ('96 Eclipse - Blairsville, GA) did well again, finishing in the semi-final round.
Although Gainesville, GA racer Joshua Sisson (10 years old) has been in all four 8-12 Jr. Dragster finals this year, 2003 Rookie of the Year Dylan Kent didn't let that bother him, and Kent took the 8-12 win tonight. The nine year old Kent from Acworth, GA has won races at the NHRA Challenge in Albany and the Gritz Blitz, and earned his first Atlanta Dragway victory with a 13.09, 48.69mph (13.02 dial) courtesy of a better reaction time. Sisson's ride went 9.05, 71.98mph (8.98 dial). Two time Track Champion "Mad Matt" Gillen from Gainesville, GA (12) was one of the semi-finalists, and nine year old Preston LaCount (whose dad Ray won Super Pro) was the other semi-finalist.
Fourteen year old Bradley Myers from Loganville, GA won 13-17 Jr. Dragster against two time finalist Lauren Turner (13 - Pendergrass, GA). Myers said his car ran near-perfect all night, varying from 8.07 to 8.12. His final round time was 8.12, 79.11mph (8.10 dial), and Turner's car ran an identical, but second across the finish line 8.12, 79.59mph (8.11 dial). Danielle Krause (13 - Peachtree City, GA) earned a semi-final trophy for her night's work.

We'd like to thank Jack Lane for sharing his Adventures with Automobiles article (a 2.3 MB pdf file with text and photos). Part of what he discusses is his experiences with the Georgia Tech Auto Club.
Speaking of the Ga. Tech Auto Club, Hoyt Grimes participated in their adventures with Georgia's first dragster. David revised his article about Hoyt (originally published in December, 2003) and updated it with new information.

Atlanta Dragway Results from Tim Glover Posted Sunday, April 11, 2004 by DavidDilbeck
GOOD "FAST FRIDAY" WEATHER CONTINUES FOR FANS AND RACERS
BANKS CROSSING, GA Unseasonably dry weather brought out another huge crowd for Atlanta Dragway's "Year One Fast Friday" show, as over 300 racers made quick quarter-mile passes to the fans' delight on Good Friday, April 9. As a result, Street Legal racers had a big field to contend with in the Year One Power Hour, and the competition was intense.
Driving a surprisingly fast 2001 Ford Lightning pickup, Davy Hartsell of Greer, S.C. nailed the Christmas Tree with a .526 for Best Reaction Time of the 9:00-10:00 PM Power Hour, taking home a $50 Year One Gift Certificate voucher. Buford's Matt Leetch ran the Fastest Pass (118.76 MPH) in his potent 1993 Mustang, while Chad Tench of Gainesville recorded low E.T.in the nightly competition for street-legal cars and pickups with his Camaro SS. Leetch and Tench each picked up a $50 Year One Gift Certificate voucher for their efforts.
Sponsored by Year One in Braselton, along with the Hayes Family Dealerships in Lawrenceville, Gainesville and Cornelia, Atlanta Dragway's Fast Friday show is primarily an opportunity for drivers of street-legal vehicles to "race the strip, not the street." Racecars and motorcycles are also welcome for Test & Tune and grudge match racing on designated Friday nights at "Georgia's House of Speed." The next Year One Fast Friday program is scheduled for Friday, April 23rd, with gates opening at 6:00 PM for both racers and spectators.

Kurt Johnson Drives to a Runner-Up Finish in Las Vegas Posted Monday, April 5, 2004 by DavidDilbeck
Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Racing team had an outstanding day during Sunday's final eliminations of the SummitRacing.com Nationals, scoring a runner-up finish at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
After qualifying third, Johnson combined strong driving skills and a powerful race car to score early round wins over veterans Bruce Allen and Jeg Coughlin. In the semi-finals, he faced Jason Line, who had qualified in the second position. Drilling his young opponent by over four hundredths of a second at the starting line, Johnson powered through the quarter-mile in 6.912 seconds with a top speed of 200.38 mph to score the hole shot win, overcoming Line's quicker 6.900-second elapsed time. This placed KJ in his second final of the 2004 season, 52nd of his career, and third consecutive championship round in Las Vegas, where he would face rival and No. 1 qualifier Greg Anderson.
Racing without lane choice and against a car with a perceived performance advantage, Johnson knew he would need every advantage to score his 29th career win. Rising to the challenge, Johnson used his best reaction time of the day to leave on Anderson by a hundredth of second. Even though he made on of the better runs in the less-preferred right hand lane, his 6.908-second elapsed time was not enough to hold off Anderson's 6.849-second charge.
Despite the initial disappointment, Johnson realized it had been a very productive weekend.
"You're never happy when you lose in the final, but we're still pleased with our performance. We came here with a combination that we had never used before at a national event, and made it all the way to the final. Anyway you look at it, it's a good weekend.
"For some reason, our engine seemed to be falling off today, because we're off about four hundredths from where we were at the beginning of the weekend, which obviously didn't help. This particular engine has about forty runs on it, so we'll take it back to Georgia and see what we find.
"But the news is not all bad. I drove well today, leaving on everyone I faced, and the ACDelco Cavalier made good runs all weekend, responding well to our adjustments. Sure, it would be nice to win here, but we're not about to give up. There are twenty-seven other drivers who would love to be in our place.
"The bottom line is that we need to find more power. In the final, we were right with him in the first 330 feet, but by the top end we were down a few hundredths and one mile per hour in top speed, which is all horsepower. That's all it is, so we'll just keep working at it until we find more."
