BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Kurt Johnson's season has more peaks and valleys than the hills that surround Bristol Dragway, the site of Sunday's Mac Tools Thunder Valley NHRA Nationals. Fresh from a final-round appearance in Houston on April 14, Johnson qualified in the precarious 16th spot and fell to No. 1 qualifier Troy Coughlin in the first round, 6.984/197.83 to 7.029/197.91. In spite of his early exit, Johnson gained a position in the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock championship, moving up to seventh in the standings. Johnson and his team continued to sort out the new ACDelco Cavalier they debuted in Houston. While the results were promising, the ferocious competition in Pro Stock leaves no margin for error.
"The motor's fine, everything's working well, but we're four hundredths behind in the first 330 feet," Johnson said. "You just can't win races like that.
"I went up to the starting line as cool as can be when I raced Coughlin, and that's good," Kurt continued. "I'm starting to like the car, but it needs to produce better numbers. We're going to test here tomorrow and get ready for Atlanta."
Johnson is also preparing a new Jerry Haas-built Cavalier that is similar to the car campaigned by his father.
"This new car is a twin of Dad's, so we'll be able to double the information input for the rest of the season," he said. "It should really help us to run similar setups because we both have ideas. The goal is to come up with two really fast race cars."
KURT JOHNSON RACE RESULTS Qualified: No. 16 at 6.916/200.62 First Round: Troy Coughlin (6.984/197.83) defeated Kurt Johnson (7.029/197.91)
Final Round: Warren Johnson (6.986/198.41) defeated Ron Krisher (6.975/198.15) Low ET: Troy Coughlin, 6.853 seconds (track record) Top Speed: Ron Krisher, 201.58 mph (track record)

Gene Wilson- Bristol Wrap-Up by David Harris Posted Tuesday, April 30, 2002 by DavidDilbeck

GENE WILSON, driver of the Mopar Parts Dodge Neon R/T
Gene Wilson took his first plunge into NHRA Pro Stock competition, and came out on the wrong end of a close race. Warren Johnson clicked off 7.005-second lap at 198.61 mph to outrun Wilson’s 7.052-second pass at 197.16 mph.
“It was a pretty good race,” Wilson said. “We left pretty close together, event though I think he got me a little there on the tree. I was hoping for a little bit better showing in my first round of competition. I do realize that you can’t just come in here and go rounds in my first race. I can’t be too hard on myself for that. At the same time, I think I could have done better.”

Tue, 30 Apr 2002 W.J. Goes all the Way in Bristol Bash Courtesy of Rick Voegelin, TMG Sports Marketing
BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Warren Johnson returned to the familiar ground of Bristol Dragway's winner's circle after he scored his first victory of the 2002 season in Sunday's Mac Tools Thunder Valley NHRA Nationals. A perennial winner at the Tennessee track in the late '70s, Johnson notched his first victory at Bristol Dragway in the modern era over final-round opponent Ron Krisher. Johnson's holeshot win with his GM Performance Parts Pontiac vaulted him to first place in the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock championship standings. W.J. defeated Gene Wilson, George Marnell and V. Gaines to advance to the final round for the second time in 2002 and the 137th time in his career. He posted his 88th career national event victory with a 6.986/198.41 mph run to Krisher's quicker 6.975 at 198.15 mph. Johnson's .035-second reaction time advantage gave him the edge he needed to hold off Krisher.
"I think we've turned the corner on consistency," said Johnson after winning his 13th elimination round in six races. "We're not necessarily the fastest car out there, but round for round we're hanging right in there, and that's what it really takes."
The track's elevation, combined with rain and rapidly changing weather conditions, compelled Pro Stock competitors to adjust their raceday setups.
"I didn't really worry about the rain delay," Johnson reported. "NHRA does a good job of preparing the track. The coat of rubber on it was extremely thin, so the water couldn't get underneath it and peel it up. In fact, we got a little more aggressive for the final than we had for any of the other rounds, and it paid off."
Johnson became the sixth different Pro Stock winner in the six races contested this season.
"I guess you call that parity," Johnson noted. "We'd like to break out and win three or four of these things, but when you look at the closeness of competition out there, everybody's got to be on their game."
Johnson's Thunder Valley NHRA Nationals victory, combined with a first-round loss by Jim Yates, gave the Professor a 65-point margin over Yates in the championship race. W.J. will have little time to savor his lead, however. The action resumes next weekend when Atlanta Dragway, Johnson's home track, hosts the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals presented by Pontiac.
WARREN JOHNSON RACE RESULTS Qualified: No. 7 at 6.887/201.10 mph
First Round: Warren Johnson (7.005/198.61) defeated Gene Wilson (7.052/197.16) Second Round: Johnson (6.982/198.67) defeated George Marnell (7.027/197.02) Semifinal: Johnson (6.966/198.99) defeated V. Gaines (6.970/198.23) Final Round: Johnson (6.986/198.41) defeated Ron Krisher (6.975/198.15)

Sunday Results From Atlanta Dragway's Fun Ford Weekend by Tim Glover Posted Monday, April 22, 2002 by DavidDilbeck
RACE DATE: April 19-21, 2002 FROM: Tim Glover EVENT: Fun Ford Show at Atlanta Dragway
"TRASH TRUCKS" CLEAN UP AT ATLANTA DRAGWAY DURING FUN FORD WEEKEND by Tim Glover
For the third major event in a row this year, a Florida event was completed at the Atlanta Dragway. First, NMCA finished their rained out Florida race here, then ProStar finished their rained out Gainesville Motorcycle event, then Fun Ford finished their Orlando event here on Saturday. Pro 5.0 racer Chuck Samuels brought the crowd to their feet Saturday night in the Orlando final after he lost control in his car and crossed the finish line on the roof. Samuels was fine, the chassis was OK, but the Mustang body was a bit worse for the wear.
Saturday Street Ford (mufflers and DOT tires required) racer Jim Peebles became this weekend's first winner when he defeated Jodee Lee, who was in her second final round this year.
Quick Ford racer Mike Moore defeated Atlanta Dragway regular James Noel in a double red-light affair. Noel changed the engine combination this year in his '66 Fairlane so he could compete in some Nostalgia races, using a 390 FE block, 406 tri-power heads and a medium riser two four barrel intake on his ride. The most popular class this weekend was the Quick Ford class (slicks allowed, no electronics). The race director had to open up two additional staging lanes to handle the racers.
Modular Motor racer David Smith had an easy run in the Fast Ford final after the battery in Donna McCain's '85 Mustang gave up the ghost and would not start for the final. McCain was philosophical about her loss, adding "I've got $500, the paint is still on the car, and the oil is still in the pan. It's been a good night."
Unlike last weekend, where rains ruled, the weather turned out sunny and clear all weekend for the Atlanta edition of the Fun Ford Weekend. Two friends, Kevin Todd from Phenix City, AL and Ronnie Sewell from Columbus, GA, drove their nearly identical white Ford trucks, with TRASH TRUCK emblazoned on the windshield, to many round wins this weekend. Kevin Todd finished in the Saturday Quick Ford semis, then returned Sunday and won two different classes, Top Truck and Quick Ford. Meanwhile, Ronnie Sewell finished runner up in the Sunday Street Ford class with his machine.
Will McKay added a fifteenth Fun Ford money winner sticker to the rear windshield of his '85 Thunderbird after his Sunday Fast Ford win. McKay, who has won one night at Atlanta each year for the past three years said, "I wanted to pull a double this weekend. The closest I got was in Richmond three years ago, when I won the first day and runner upped the second day. "I'm proud to say it's not a Mustang," Sunday Street Ford winner Brad Gasaway said after the event was over.
Bracket racing was only part of the action this weekend. A large manufacturer's midway and swap meet area offered many OEM and performance parts for blue oval enthusiasts. For the paltry sum of $750, one could have bought not one, but two late 70's four cylinder Mustang convertibles. As usual, the car show featured a wide array of vehicles, from souped up Contours to a legendary Thunderbolt belonging to Bill Dismuke from Donalsonville, GA. Pelzer, SC resident Tom McJunkin's '74 Mustang II Pro Streeter was a well done piece. For someone into fast race cars, Larry Burnette's '97 Super Pro Mustang was available for sale and ready to race.
Nine classes of racing were offered in addition to the bracket classes, ranging from the wild and wooly Pro 5.0 class to the new Focus Frenzy class. Several people actually went out and bought a Focus specifically to race in this class, including today's finalists. Last year's Atlanta Sunday Quick Ford winner, Chris Parisi, said he borrowed his grandmother's Focus to race this weekend (he made it to the quarter-finals). Top Truck winner Kevin Todd raced in Outlaw in 1996, Street Bandit a few years ago, but the expense got to him. He fared very well this weekend in his mildly modified truck.
Modular Motor runner up Brett Veneman just bought his '02 GT two months ago. Although he qualified 60th out of 60 cars, he didn't let that bother him. Because the class is set up on an index based on each car's performance, the only person who did better than Veneman for the weekend was winner Steve Ferguson.
Pro 5.0 winner John Gullett had the fastest car on the grounds Sunday, storming to the winner's circle with a 6.67, 215.34 mph blast in his '01 Mustang. Street Outlaw racer Brad Brand from nearby Loganville seemed like a bit of an underdog earlier in the weekend, but took the final round win with a decisive 8.31, 180.02 blast, next to Dennis Ramsey's otherwise good 8.81, 154.12.
Mike Freeman's day was over right after his final round launch in Street Renegade, where he left the red light glowing and then nearly lost control down track. Brian Mitchell already knew he had the win, and wisely slowed his car to stay out of Freeman's way, turning in a 14.16, 67.57 race winning pass.
Shane Long and Kurt Neighbor had a closer race in Street Bandit, with Long beating Neighbor by a little over a tenth of a second, 9.50, 140.63 to 9.62, 141.52. Although defending Street Warrior champ Jeremy Martorella had an edge previously, it disappeared the moment he left the starting line way too soon, making the big red you don't win this time bulb come on. John Scaro took the Street Warrior win with an 11.51, 116.28.
In addition to the True Street Saturday action, a bracket race for all True Street entrants was added Sunday. Although it appeared that Jeremy Pearson would win, a technical infraction made Danny Taylor the True Street bracket race winner.
Look for even more true blue oval racers next year at the Atlanta edition of the Fun Ford Show.
