March 23, 2002 Results from Atlanta Dragway by Amy & Tim Glover
Posted Monday, March 25, 2002 by DavidDilbeck

RACE DATE: March 23, 2002
FROM: Amy & Tim Glover
EVENT: First completed Summit ET series event at Atlanta Dragway in 2002
In spite of the unseasonably cold weather tonight, most of the racing action at Atlanta Dragway was completed tonight.

Because the track became too cold for the high powered Super Pro cars, racing action was halted with 20 cars remaining in competition.

Two time Atlanta Dragway Sportsman champion Rob Hogue stopped another former champion, Rusty Brown, in the Sportsman final tonight. Brown had the better start, but Hogue’s ‘84 Monte Carlo SS was better at the big end, carding a breakout 11.54, 116.59 on an 11.55 dial. Brown said he just came up today to have fun, so he brought his ‘01 Chrysler 300M family car and went all the way to the finals, where he broke out a little more than Hogue, 16.05, 84.75 (16.07 target). Hogue thanked Ed Nalley for the engine work, Sid Neal for the transmission, Bill for gas and H&R Race Cars for the fabrication work. The “Racin’ Reverend”, Gerald Graves, finished in the semis.

Former Motorcycle champion Jay Rhyne, took out defending champion Joey Rutledge in Motorcycle. Actually, the race was over as soon as Rutledge left the starting line when he lit the big red bulb with his ‘01 Katana, and then broke out with a 12.25, 109.76 (12.50 dial). Rhyne ran his ‘83 Kawasaki out to a 12.23, 103.45 (12.34 dial).

Trophy Street featured another first time winner, Wes German. German’s ‘82 Ford F100 broke out a bit with a 12.84, 105.64 on a 13.00 target after he saw his opponent, Brian Harris, light up the big red bulb. Even though he knew he was out, Harris chose to run his ‘00 Mustang all the way out, turning in a 13.94, 99.12 on a 14.10 dial. Last week’s winner, Harold Wilson (‘74 Nova), was the lone semi-finalist.

West Oak High School freshman Kelly Moore (15) won her second 13-17 Jr. Dragster race in a row tonight. Moore started her run with a good .562, then turned in an 8.87, 73.41 (8.82 dial). Kristen Neal (17) has been in the final round for six of her last seven races, but tonight, the accelerator cable broke after her burnout. The cagey Neal went ahead and staged her car, hoping Moore would red light or break out, but that didn’t happen. Casey Free (13) finished in the semi-finals.

Kyle Denton (12) started racing 8-12 Jr. Dragster late last year, and had never won a single round until tonight. Denton made up for it by winning all of them tonight, including the final against another first time finalist, Ashton Shubert (8). If Shubert had been .004 seconds slower on the reaction time, the end result would have been a win for her, but the close .496 reaction time still lit the red light. Denton’s machine went 9.81, 59.52 on a 9.57 target, while Shubert’s ex Valvoline car, which won races for its two previous drivers, went closer to its dial with a 13.42, 46.48 (13.36 dial). Scott Digby (10) finished in the semi-finals in his first ever race.

DEFENDING SUPER PRO CHAMP HOWARD WINS FIRST RACE OF SEASON AT ATLANTA DRAGWAY by Tim Glover
Posted Monday, March 18, 2002 by DavidDilbeck

Because rain won last week's first Summit ET series event last week,
tonight's race, held in conjunction with the NMCA / NSCA Hot Rod Power
Fest, became the first completed race of the year at Atlanta Dragway.
Although women are the definite minority in drag racing, the last three
bracket categories contested today featured a female in each final.

Another female, Annette Summers, won the top NMCA / NSCA Hot Rod
class, Pro Street, in the rain delayed Florida final. Because the Moroso
Hot Rod event was rained out a couple of weeks ago, the promoters completed
the Florida race during the Saturday qualifying session at Atlanta Dragway.
Summers beat Hank Hill with her '68 Camaro by .017 seconds at the finish
line, running 6.75 to Hill's 6.78.

Defending Super Pro track champion "Bad" Brad Howard continued his
streak today with a Super Pro win against Thomas Bell. Friend Jim Mayfield
and Howard stayed up all night working on his brand new '02 Miller
dragster, changing out the oiling system. Their work was rewarded with a
win in the car's very first race (it had four time trials prior to today).
Howard's clutch .506 react and close .01 over 5.10, 127.49 took the win
light. Bell's '00 Undercover dragster barely broke out with a 5.03, 137.20
(5.04 dial). Donny Brown Jr. ('95 Spitzer dragster) won his way all the
way to a semi-final finish. Howard said he wasn't even going to race the
car tonight because of the oiling system problems, but Mayfield came over
and helped out, making his win possible.

Jesse Hicks' Pro car engine was sitting on the workbench, so he raced
his wife Tina's '67 Buick Special in Sportsman, getting the win light
against Cindy Williams, who had the honor of competing in the DRUSA
Footbrake Allstars Invitational with her '74 Challenger last year. Hicks'
reaction time advantage helped him in the double breakout affair. Hicks
turned in a 13.16, 101.81 (13.17 target), while Williams went a little
further under with an 11.75, 112.50 (11.78 dial). Dale Anderson ('68 Chevy
II) was the lone semi-finalist.

Harold Wilson from nearby Winder defeated his son Michael in the
Trophy Street semi-finals, then took the win against Jodee Lee in the final
in her first final round appearance. Wilson's reaction time advantage in
his '74 Nova made the difference. His car turned in a 14.27, 84.91 (14.12
dial). Lee's '00 Mustang was also off the mark, running a 14.69, 95.14
(14.55 target). Michael Wilson ('01 Silverado) took home the semi-final
trophy.

Because this weekend's event was a non-points race, the two Jr. Dragster
classes were combined tonight. Seven year veteran Kelly Moore (15) took on
Cody Martin (13) in the Jr. Dragster final, earning her first win of the
year. Martin actually had a little reaction time advantage, but his car
discovered a little more ET down track, and broke out with an 8.95, 70.42
(8.99 dial). Moore's machine went 8.70, 72.73 (8.64 dial). Ashley Dumas
(15) won the semi-final trophy.

RACE DATE: March 15-17, 2002
FROM: Tim Glover
EVENT: NMCA / NSCA Hot Rod Power Fest
NOTES: The Hot Rod Power Fest used to be the final race of the year for the NMCA series. This year, NSCA merged with the show, and the Atlanta race was moved to the second race of the year for their series. In addition to this weekend’s test and tune, bracket race and 15 Hot Rod classes, the rained out Moroso Florida race was completed this weekend at Atlanta, making for lots of passes down the track. Comp Cams / TCI Pro Street racer Annette Summers became “King of the Hill” this weekend when she won the Florida final against Hank Hill. She needed that win badly, and took the points lead (for a little while). Although she qualified for the Atlanta race, her engine was wounded and she was unable to make the call for the Atlanta event. Hill made up for his Florida loss with a decisive victory against Tony Gentile in the Atlanta Pro Street race. The Accel / DFI Pro Outlaw Street race had fans on their feet. After a protracted “burndown” at the starting line, Lawrence Conley finally staged his turbocharged car, and then left the starting line slightly too soon, resulting in a foul start. Normally, the story would have been over at this point, but his opponent, Jason Collins, got loose downtrack and didn’t lift out of the throttle soon enough. Collins lost control of his car, crossed the centerline, hit the wall and tripped the finish line beams with the roof of his car, re-instating Conley as the winner. Hedman Hedders Nostalgia Super Stock was back in action, featuring a repeat finalist from last year, Brian Merrick. This time, Merrick took the win in spite of his opponent’s slightly better reaction time. BF Goodrich Traction Advantage racers were turning in high eight and low nine second, 150mph plus passes on Comp T/A drag radials, an impressive feat.

Whisnant Goes To the Semis In Gainesville
Courtesy of Patti Miles

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Today at the 33rd Annual Mac Tools Gatornationals, Mark Whisnant driver of the RW Performance Chevrolet Cavalier, assumed his first ever Pro Stock birth. For a first time Pro Stock competitor just qualifying for the race is something to be proud of, but to go all the way to the semi-finals is a phenomenal feat.
On Saturday Whisnant ran a 6.880 / 201.55 mph to assume the 16th spot on the elimination’s ladder. His first round opponent would be Number 1 qualifier Ron Krisher. Krisher, who on paper had the advantage over Whisnant, but Krisher gave the race away on the starting line when he left early and red lit. Whisnant ran a 6.912 / 201.31 mph to Krisher’s 6.957 / 202.79 mph. "Taking out the Number 1 qualifier is a victory all by its self," said Whisnant of Stockbridge, Ga. "Every thing from then on was gravy.

In Round 2 Whisnant would meet V. Gaines. When the light went green it was all Whisnant. Whisnant cut a .482 of a second light to a much slower light of .544 for Gaines. At the finish line Whisnant would run a 6.926 / 200.86 mph to defeat Gaines’ who ran a 6.911 / 200.77 mph.

"I had to cut a good light against Gaines. I knew that I had to do my job on the line to get past him. He ran a quicker ET, but it wasn’t enough to catch me on the top end.

Whisnant’s opponent in the semi-finals would be Jeg Coughlin. Coughlin took a slight advantage at the starting line and held on to defeat Whisnant. Coughlin ran a 6.913 / 199.76 mph to Whisnant’s 6.918 / 201.31 mph.

"I am very happy with our performance here today. I knew when we came here that we could be competitive. We thought we could qualify here, and did. Then went out there and ran heads up with them. That has given us confidence. Now we know we will be able to run with them every weekend.

"My crew chief, Brad Jeter, did a great job here today. He made some good calls and kept me focused all day. My crew, Terry, James, Brent and Dennis also did an excellent job. They really came together this weekend, and gave me a great racecar.

"I can’t say enough about the Reher/Morrison horsepower we have under the hood. Mark Johnson from Reher was here helping us in the pits between rounds. I have to thank him for all his hard work.

"Of course, I have to thank my Dad, Step-Mother Bobbie, and my wife Gina. Without their support and confidence I would not be here racing today.

"We came here planning to qualify and then take it round by round. That is exactly what we did here today. I think we have really made a statement here this weekend; the RW Performance team is here and we are not going away."

Vaughn, Albritton, Lambert, Piatek, Richardson, Head, and Bosarge Win

Jackson, S.C. - Billing Vaughn, Stanley Albritton, Frank Lambert, Myron Piatek, Edmond Richardson, Joel Head, and Mark Bosarge win at Carolina Dragway (1/8 mile).
Edmond Richardson nearly pulled off a double, just a few weeks after winning Top Dragster at Hub City. At Carolina Dragway, Richardson may have "only" scored a runner-up in Top Dragster, but he did succeed in picking up his second divisional Ironman, this time in Quick Rod, and against the now 2-time runner-up in the class, Tony Fuller.

Myron Piatek made it two in a row in Stock, downing the defending Div. 2 champ, Gale Pinkston in the final. Joel Head stepped up a notch from a runner-up earlier in the year, to win Super Rod over Southern Dragway winner, Carl Freeman. Other first time 2002 winners included Billy Vaughn (TS), Stanley Albritton (TD), Frank Lambert (SS), and Mark Bosarge (HR).

2001 IHRA Champ Signs with Nickens Brothers Racing

CONROE, Texas -- Gene Wilson, the 2001 IHRA Pro Stock World Champion, has been named the new driver for the factory-backed Mopar Parts Neon R/T NHRA Pro Stock entry of Nickens Brothers Racing. Wilson will make his POWERade Drag Racing Series debut during qualifying for this weekend’s 33rd annual Gatornationals at Gainesville (Fla.) Raceway on March 15.
“I think this is such a tremendous opportunity,” Wilson said “I’m just honored to be a part of the Mopar team. They have such a great history and I can’t wait to get started. I look forward to working with the whole Nickens Brothers Racing team.”

Wilson, a resident of Canton, Ga., captured eight IHRA national event titles en route to winning the 2001 Pro Stock world championship. The 29 year old currently holds IHRA’s national elapsed time and speed records while driving a Charlie Hunt-owned Pro Stock machine. Wilson qualified No. 1 in a record nine-straight IHRA national events in 2001, and holds both elapsed time and speed records at nine different tracks.

“He did a tremendous job in the race car during testing and he possesses a lot of character,” said Nickens Brothers Racing team owner David Nickens. “He has a lot of credentials in IHRA and we feel that he is a great match for this team, and that’s important for overall team chemistry.”

Wilson is the son of television personality Orlando Wilson, who hosts many outdoors and fishing shows on various networks.

“We’re happy David Nickens found a driver that he feels can get the job done on Sunday,” said Bret Fischer, DaimlerChrysler drag racing program manager. “After an extensive driver search, it was difficult for David to find a driver with the skill set that we were looking for. Gene has proved himself in other forms of racing, and we’ll find out soon enough if he can perform in the NHRA.”

Mopar Parts, the parts arm of the DaimlerChrysler Motors Corp., sponsors three professional teams and four drivers in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, including Nitro Funny Car driver Dean Skuza of Skuza Motorsports, the factory-backed Pro Stock team of Nickens Brothers Racing with drivers Darrell Alderman and Gene Wilson and the Pro Stock team of Larry Morgan Racing with driver Larry Morgan.

Pro Stock Steals First Day Limelight
By Larry Sullivan

DINWIDDIE, Va. - The first day of racing at the CompetitionPlus.com IHRA Spring Open presented by Lizzard Racing Engines saw the usual headlining Pro Modified cars failing to make a complete run, while the Pro Stock and Funny Car competitors were lighting up the scoreboards.
Under ideal conditions for normally aspirated engines, the 2001 IHRA Summit Racing Series Pro Stock champion, Gene Wilson, made repeated assaults on both the track and IHRA World records. After bettering the IHRA speed record with a 213.60 mph speed on a 6.539 second pass, Wilson's crew turned the car around quickly to make one last run just as staging lanes closed for the day. It was a stunning run, with a 6.518 second elapsed time (under the IHRA record of 6.532) and a 213.94 mph speed, the fastest ever run.

Though Wilson started the new season where he left off last year, his competition was not sitting idly by while Wilson tore up the records (note, since these runs are "unnofficial" the records still stand). Chris Holbrook, resurgent after a tough 2001 season, showed that he will be a factor in the championship race with a 6.543 at 211.73, while Dwayne Rice wasn't far back at 6.553 at 211.36 and John Montecalvo was also close with a 6.562 at 211.13. And there are three more days to go!

Not to be outdone by the Pro Stock contingent, John Vouros piloted the CompetitionPlus.com Firebird Funny Car to a picture-perfect 5.841 at 234.57 mph to top the short Funny Car list.

Meanwhile, the blown and nitrous injected Pro Modified cars were looking for the key to the starting line at Virginia Motorsports Park, stuck with 1.03 60-foot times and lots of tire shake. Mike Ashley closed the day with the quickest launch of the bunch, a 1.01 60-foot time in a former Al Billes Studebaker. The new "Gotham City" car features even more detailed graphics than his earlier versions, definitely worth a pit visit sometime this season.

Harold Martin came the closest to making a full pass in the Pro Modified category, shutting off early for a 6.484 at 215 mph.

We'll be back tomorrow for more of the same, quicker and faster as the teams get their 2002 setups sorted out. After today, you can bet the Pro Mod folks will be looking for a way to steal the limelight back from the Pro Stock racers.

------ Run Log -----

Pro Stock --

Chris Holbrook, SRI Marble & Granite '02 Cougar, had lots of tire shake and spin on his first try with the new car. His second try, however, was a "keeper," a solid 1.012 60-foot time and a straight run for a 6.566 at 211.26. His third shot came right behind Wilson's eye-watering pass and for the first half of the run Holbrook was running quicker than Wilson, but he lost ground on the tall end of the track. Holbrook's incremental times were 1.006 at 60 feet, 2.768 at 330, 4.226/168.79 at half track, 5.481 at 1,000 feet, and 6.543/211.73 at the line. His was the third run so far under the VMS track ET record.

Ron Miller, Moser Engineering '02 Cavalier, launch check with a 1.016 60-foot time. Second pass was a full pass, 1.001 60-foot time, 6.595 at 208.71. Third pass, the car tried to turn left just past the 60-foot timer, but Miller wrestled it back, posting a 1.007 60-foot time and a 6.636 at 209.52.

John Montecalvo, Citgo '02 Cavalier, shook and turned left, posting a 1.104 60-foot time before he shut it off. His second was quicker off the line, a 1.042, but the car drifted left of the groove and he lifted. His third shot was a keeper, a 1.023 60-foot time and a 6.562 at 211.13 mph, the fourth run under the old VMS track ET record.

Dwayne Rice left hard on his first attempt, with a 1.011 60-foot time, but the car turned when he shifted into second gear and he lifted. His second try was a good one, a 1.005 60-foot time and a 6.553 at 211.36, his ET the fourth run under the old VMS track record today.

Gene Wilson, "One Bad Cat" '02 Cougar, launched with a 1.030 60-foot time and then the car turned right, toward the wall, so he shut it off. On his second try the car spun the tires on the launch with a 1.142 60-foot time, but then the tires got a grip and he rocketed to a 6.657 at 213.30 mph, just shy of Wilson's IHRA record of 213.37. His third shot took care of that little detail, the car on a string-straight run after a solid 1.030 60-foot time. Clocked at 2.790 at 330 feet, 4.239/170.02 at half track, and 5.485 at 1,000 feet, Wilson lit up the scoreboards with a 6.539 (just shy of his IHRA ET record of 6.532) and a speed of 213.60 mph. He hot-lapped the car to make one more run and it was a beauty - the 60-foot time down to 1.016 and all the incremental times even quicker than his previous run leading up to a 6.518 second elapsed time and a 213.94 mph speed. That made it five runs under the old VMS track ET record.

Funny Car --

Rob Atchison, in a beautifully painted Firebird with no lettering, basketballed the rear tires to a 0.962 60-foot time, then shut it off.

John Vouros, CompetitionPlus.com Firebird, 0.965 60-foot time with visible shake, early shutoff for a 6.030 at 226.51. His second run was not as good, with lots of tire shake and spin on a 0.980 60-foot time before he clicked it off. His third was a picture-perfect run, smoothly off the line with a 0.958 60-foot time and right down the groove for a 5.841 at 234.57 mph. His incremental times were 2.768 at 330 feet, 4.226 and 168.79 mph at the eighth-mile, and 5.481 at 1,000 feet.

Pro Modified --

Mike Ashley, "Gotham City" '53 Studebaker (with the best graphics package so far this season), had a wild run. He was the last car down the track today. On his first pass in a blower car, he posted a 1.008 60-foot time and then the car moved to the left of the groove. Ashley drove through it, posting a stout 4.140 at 177.93 on the half-track timers before shutting it off and coasting through.

Al Billes, '57 Studebaker, shook so hard that the car turned left and the driver's door popped open. He stopped and backed the car up rather than drive it off the other end for a shorter tow back to the pits. Second try, again had traction problems after a 1.042 60-foot time. Again backed it up to take the short route to the pits. Fourth try, same script.

Steve Cossis posted a 1.036 60-foot time on his first try and made an easy run the rest of the way. Second time out he was clocked at 1.038 for the first 60 feet and appeared to be on a solid run, but had the chutes out way before the finish line. His third shot came up with a 1.037 short time (right in between the first two) and once again he shut it off around the 1,000-foot mark. He posted a half-track 4.116 at 177.98 mph.

Harold Martin, ACDelco Camaro, 1.038 60-foot time and an early-shutoff 6.484 at 215.55.

Steve Vick, '68 Camaro, posted a 1.037 60-foot time, then shut it down.

Roy Wasko, '68 Camaro, had a 1.075 60-foot time and shut it down almost immediately.

GLENDORA, Calif. (March 5, 2002) - The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) has named Craig L. Armstrong as General Manager for Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga. Atlanta Dragway, one of five drag racing facilities owned and operated by the NHRA, is the long-time host of the famed NHRA Southern Nationals.

In his new position, Armstrong will be responsible for overseeing all operations at Atlanta Dragway, including competition, sales, facility maintenance, marketing, community relations and supervising the track's personnel. He will report directly to Cary Menard, NHRA vice president for business and legal affairs, who has direct responsibility for all of the NHRA owned and operated tracks across the country. Other NHRA owned and operated tracks include: Gainesville Raceway, Gainesville, Fla.; National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis Raceway Park, Indianapolis; and, Pomona Raceway, Pomona, Calif.

"We're very fortunate to have someone with Craig's background and capabilities take over the GM position at Atlanta Dragway," said Menard. "He has certainly compiled an effective management record at Portland Speedway and we're confident he will demonstrate the same at Atlanta Dragway, one of our most important NHRA-owned and operated facilities."

Since 1988, Armstrong has been General Manager and CEO of Western Speedways, Inc., which operates Portland (Ore.) Speedway. During his tenure there he supervised all aspects of the race facility. He also has worked as owner of Armstrong Motorsports, a Portland-based marketing and broadcasting consulting firm, and served as a pit reporter for MRN Radio at various NASCAR events. In addition, he has produced radio and television broadcasts for NASCAR, CART, Formula One, IMSA and SCCA events.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with such a great organization as NHRA," said Armstrong, who will begin his new position on March 15th. "I have a broad background in oval racing, and I will be the first to admit I have a lot to learn about drag racing. Fortunately I am a drag racing fan, so it will be an easy transition. I plan to bring all of the focus, energy, determination and passion to Atlanta Dragway and do my part to help make NHRA the motorsport for the 21st century."

Armstrong and wife Leslie have three children, Lauren, 21, Ian, 18, and Beth, 16. The family is in the process of relocating to the north Georgia area.

Headquartered in Glendora, Calif., the NHRA is the primary sanctioning body for the sport of drag racing in the United States. It presents 23 national events through its NHRA POWERADE Drag Racing Series. The NHRA has more than 80,000 members nationwide and more than 130 member tracks.
