Book Review: Slingshot Spectacular: The Front-Engine Dragster EraBook Review: Review by David Dilbeck, Editor Steve Reyes comes through again! His latest book is now available - Slingshot Spectacular: The Front-Engine Dragster Era by Steve Reyes (published by Car Tech Inc.)! Covering what many drag racing fans consider the best years of drag racing (the front engine dragster era), this book is filled with great photos and interesting captions/personal stories. For the few drag racing fans that don't know, Mr. Reyes is one of the best-ever drag racing photographers and he proves it again with this collection! If you are a drag racing fan, you probably know that most Top Fuel dragsters were front-engined until about 1971-1972. This book contains photos of dragsters from that era - all kinds of cars with all kinds of engines. As I was reading through Slingshot Spectacular: The Front-Engine Dragster Era, memories of cars from my childhood days came flooding back. I am old enough (and fortunate enough to have an older brother who liked drag racing way back when) to have seen a few front engine dragster races and they were great! It was nothing like today's Top Fuel racing. In my opinion it was better! Of course it was slower and much more dangerous, but it was great to see the large variety of cars along with push starts down the drag strips (at least here in Georgia)! Yes, I guess I'm a dinosaur, but I'm grateful to have seen a little of this part of drag racing history. If you are old enough, this book will take you back to a special time. If you're not old enough to have personal memories from this era, this book will give you an idea of how it was. The photos alone are worth the price of the book, but when you add the captions and stories from Mr. Reyes, this book is quite a bargain. It was fun to read this book! Slingshot Spectacular: The Front-Engine Dragster Era by Steve Reyes is a 9" x 9" softbound, 192 page book filled with approximately 360 spectacular photos (225 black and white & 135 color) of mostly front engine dragsters. The chapters included are: 1. The rise and fall of the slingshot 2. NorCal, home sweet home 3. Top Fuel in Southern California 4. Slingshots from around the country 5. Reyes' Top 32 of 1969-71 (Georgia's own Pete Robinson is #12!). I've been a Steve Reyes fan for many years, but every time he and CarTech team up on a new book I become an even bigger fan of Steve's work. Don't miss out - buy this book now!
