Book Review: Quarter-Mile Chaos - Images of Drag Racing MayhemBook Review: Review by David Dilbeck, Editor I've been a fan of Steve Reyes' photographic skill since I was a child and I've been looking forward to seeing this book since I first heard about it. In my opinion, Steve Reyes is the best ever at capturing drag racing action photos - especially high speed crash and burn shots. After receiving my review copy of Quarter-Mile Chaos: Images of Drag Racing Mayhem by Steve Reyes from Car Tech Inc., I was thrilled to see examples of his best shots (some of his photos that were published in the leading drag racing magazines and newspapers back in the 1970s are also included). I thoroughly enjoyed viewing the photos and I think you will be, too! When you take a look at this book you'll understand why Steve Reyes was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame.
Quarter-Mile Chaos: Images of Drag Racing Mayhem by Steve Reyes is a 10" x 10" hardbound, 180 page book filled with approximately 200 spectacular photos (approximately 20 color photos) of cars on fire, top fuelers lifting blowers, wheelstands, altereds taking out the tree, fire burnouts, crashes and carnage (Steve states that none of the drivers were severely injured from the crashes or fires that are captured in this book). Steve's photos capture all sorts of drag cars doing all sorts of things on (and off) the strip! From Shirley Muldowney's two infamous funny car fires (Dragway 42 in 1972 and Indy 1973) to the "battle of the dually tow trucks" (Don Schumacher and Jim Paoli), the book includes some amazing (and sometimes bizarre) photos. You won't believe some of the multi-frame action sequences! A couple of Georgia racers are also included - the late Richard Holcomb and 1974 NHRA Funny Car Champion Shirl Greer. Along with the photos, Steve has written captions for the photos that are informative, often humorous and sometimes surprising. It always seemed that Steve had some amazing luck and was always in the right place at the right time, but he informs the reader much of that "luck" came from studying the cars and drivers and knowing what to expect from many of them. Reyes even states that several drivers asked him not to be on the top end shooting photos when they ran for fear of being another one of Reyes crash or burn subjects! From drivers you've never heard of to the top drivers in the sport, Steve Reyes captured the timeless moments on film like no one else ever has!
