Pro Stock Drag Racing of the 1970s PHOTO ARCHIVE
From Stockers to Doorslammers

By Howard V. Koby

Howard V. Koby has assembled a nice collection of Pro Stock photos from the 1970s in his new book, Pro Stock Drag Racing of the 1970s PHOTO ARCHIVE - From Stockers to Doorslammers. Of course, photos of the Pro Stock hitters of the '70s are included - Sox, Jenkins, Gapp & Roush, Booth, Glidden, Nicholson, Leal, Landy, Carlton, WJ - they're all here. In addition to the superstars, several lesser known cars are included and the book contains a nice mix of photos of different manufacturers and body styles.

The soft cover, 126 page book has a foreword by Dick Landy and is filled with mostly large, full page photos of which 66 are color (56 are full page color shots). The photos were taken by Howard Koby, Lou Hart, Steve Delgadillo, Pat Smith and Charles Gilchrist. My favorite photos are Charles Gilchrist's black & white wheelstanding-through-the-rosin match race photos. These photos are like a time capsule, providing the reader with a look back at the glory days of Pro Stock action! Fans of early Pro Stock racing will also love the 1970 Pat Smith shots from Orange County International Raceway.

If you are looking for nice photos of the early Pro Stock era, this book is definitely worth buying. Since this is a photo archive style book, it does not contain comprehensive, in-depth text about the history of the class. I have to be frank about the captions for the photos, many are inaccurate and do not fully describe the photos. Hopefully, if there is a second printing, the author and publisher will address and correct some of these text problems.

The bottom line is that if you're a fan of early Pro Stockers and photos from that era, this book is for you - just don't assume that all of the captions are factual and accurate without checking elsewhere. I'm glad to have this book in my drag racing collection and I think you will be, too!
