Book Review: The Garlits Collection: Cars That Made Drag Racing HistoryBook Review:
Review by David Dilbeck, Editor When I first heard about this book I didn't really know what to expect. Frankly, I didn't think the book would include anything that I didn't already know or include any photos that I hadn't seen before. After receiving my review copy, I discovered that I was wrong! In the newest drag racing book from CarTech, author Mike Mueller takes the reader on a journey through the history of drag racing. The 192 page book features some of the most significant cars in drag racing history and is written in a manner that is easily read. The book is very informative about drag racing history in general and even more specific about the cars featured in the book. The 10" x 10" hardbound book is filled with almost 300 color and b&w photos, including shots from inside the Don Garlits Drag Racing Museum, vintage action photos, and great color photos of the cars parked outside of the museum. Starting with a look at Don Garlits' career and the history of his museum, the author then takes the reader back to the days when the featured cars competed, further explaining what an impact the cars made during their racing days. From Dick Kraft's frighteningly simple and dangerous The Bug to Don Big Daddy Garlits' last Top Fuel dragster (Swamp Rat 34), the book has 18 chapters of record breaking drag racing machines. The Chizler, Ivo's twin, Larson's Chevelle and Muldowney's rear engine dragster are just a few of the historical cars featured. A chapter on streamliners is included and Garlits' sidewinder even shows up in a two page section! Of course, several of Mr. Garlits' cars are included, but not necessarily the ones you might think. I'm a fairly knowledgeable Don Garlits fan, but even I learned a lot about Mr. Garlits, his career, and the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing! CarTech continues to lead the publishing field in quality drag racing books and this is another book that I highly recommend. Be sure to buy a copy for yourself or as a gift for your favorite drag racing fan! David Dilbeck
The Garlits Collection: Cars That Made Drag Racing History can also be purchased from CarTech (1-800-551-4754 or www.cartechbooks.com). A $4.95 shipping and handling fee will be added to each order. Thanks to Karin Hill at CarTech, Inc. for supplying my review copy of The Garlits Collection: Cars That Made Drag Racing History! Marvin T. Smith and I are currently writing a book (Atlanta Drag Racing: The Golden Years) about Atlanta area drag racing that we hope to have completed in 2005. We intend to honor many of the local drag racers from the Atlanta area and also provide an overview of the history of organized drag racing in Atlanta. With full time jobs and families, Marv and I are pedaling as fast as we can! Keep checking GeorgiaDragRacing.com for news about our book.
