Book Review:

Fuel Altereds Forever

By Steve Reyes

If you've never seen Fuel Altereds race, you've missed out on seeing what are arguably the most exciting cars in drag racing!

I remember reading drag racing magazines in the 1960s and wishing I could see those wild machines up close and on the drag strip. These cars with a short wheelbase and blown nitro powered engines were very unpredictable on the track. This was a type of drag racing car like no other!

Many featured colorful names like Pure Hell, Winged Express, Panic!, Rat Trap, Nanook, etc., and were predominantly raced in southern California.

Living in the Southeast, I only got a chance to see the blown, nitro burning altereds once in the old days (3 AA/FAs were at the 1972 NHRA Gatornationals). I have seen them several times since then at reunion type races and at current NHRA national events (exhibition matches) and they are still as wild as I remember them being almost 40 years ago.

Steve Reyes' newest book, Fuel Altereds Forever, takes you on a memorable journey with great photos and Steve's personal memories about the rise and fall of fuel altered racing.

The chapters included are In the Beginning, Blowers and Nitro, Hang On!, Flexing Their Muscles, The Good Times and the Bad Times, and All Good Things Must End.

In addition to the text, Steve has written captions for the photos that are informative and often humorous. Mr. Reyes is one of the best-ever drag racing photographers and his photos and first hand accounts make this book one you will not want to put down until you get to the end.

Fuel Altereds Forever by Steve Reyes is a 9" x 9" softbound 192 page book filled with almost 300 spectacular photos (164 b&w and 129 color). The book features photos of all types of altereds - not just the blown and injected nitro burning AA/FAs.

You'll see photographs of wheelstands, fire burnouts, cars taking out the tree, smoky burnouts, and many other shots.

For the funny car lover, there are some very nice funny car photos, too!

I was happy to see that the late Julius Hughes, a fellow Georgian, was mentioned for winning the AA/A class at the 1964 Indy Nationals.

You won't go wrong buying this book!
