Book Review: Factory Lightweights - Detroit's Drag Racing Specials of the '60sBook Review: Review by David Dilbeck, Editor Charles Morris' latest book, Factory Lightweights - Detroit's Drag Racing Specials of the '60s is now available (published by Car Tech Inc.)! Mr. Morris does a great job of covering the history of factory lightweight drag racing vehicles, taking you through the 1960s in ten yearly chapters (plus an epilogue). The lightweight drag racing exploits of most of the major manufacturers are covered - even the beginning of funny cars. The book is written in an easily-read style with a very generous amount of on and off track photos (250 color and 150 black & white). The reader is even treated to several "behind the scenes" stories and events! This book will be a joy for the door slammer fans to read! The previously mentioned ten chapters are: 1. 1960 - Detroit begins to see the light 2. 1961 - The factories are back 3. 1962 - The cars get lighter and faster 4. 1963 - Factory lightweights look like daily drivers 5. 1964 - It's mostly Ford and Mercury against Mopar 6. 1965 - The horsepower race accelerates 7. 1966 - Factory drag racing follows a more radical path 8. 1967 - Showroom Super Stocks live in the shadows 9. 1968 - Lightweight production cars are back 10. 1969 - A very good year for factory muscle Epilogue - 1970-71 The sun sets on factory racing I believe Factory Lightweights - Detroit's Drag Racing Specials of the '60s By Charles R. Morris is the most enjoyable book about lightweight factory cars that I've ever read! The 180 page, 9" x 9" softbound book has just enough technical information to get the details correct, but without making it seem like you are reading a textbook. The photos balance the book well and make this one a winner! You'll be glad to have this book in your library!
