Book Review: Diggers, Funnies, Gassers & Altereds

I recently received a copy of Diggers, Funnies, Gassers & Altereds - Drag Racing's Golden Age by Bob McClurg from Karin Hill at CarTech, Inc. After spending a few hours reading several chapters and looking over the fantastic photography, I must say that this is another book that should be on every drag racing fan's bookshelf!

From the humorous foreword by John Force and the author's view of The Golden Age of Drag Racing (the 1950s, 1960s, and the 1970s) to the in-depth look at the history of several classes of competition, this book is a winner. The text is well written and backed up with great photographic examples. Many of the photos were taken by the author, but several contributors also shared their photographic treasures in this book.

The chapters included in the 10 inch x 10 inch hardbound coffee table style book are: The Roadsters, The Gassers, The Altereds, Front-Engine Dragsters, The Funny Cars, Rear-Engine Dragsters, Pro Stockers and Drag Racing Nostalgia.

248 color photos and 128 black and white photos are featured in the 204 page book. I was also happy to see biographical information about Bob McClurg as I have been a fan of his work for more years than I like to admit.

A few of the highlights for me are the history of the evolution of funny cars (from the stockers to the flip-tops), a surprise Pro Stocker chapter (not included in the title), separate chapters for front and rear engine dragsters, the altered chapter, and of course, the photos! Almost everyone that you would expect to be included in the book are there and many shots of regional drag racers are also included.

I was also pleased to see photos of several Georgia racers included in the book. Pete Robinson at Lions, Shirl Greer's 1974 NHRA Championship winning Mustang funny car, several Don Nicholson photos, Hubert Platt's Pinto Pro Stocker, Warren Johnson's Vega, and a color photo of one of my favorite cars - Reid Whisnant's Duster. I could go on and on, but the old saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words" has never been more appropriate. I highly recommend that you purchase this book NOW!

Marvin T. Smith and I are currently writing a book (Atlanta Drag Racing: The Golden Years) about Atlanta area drag racing that we hope to have completed in 2004. We intend to honor many of the local drag racers from the Atlanta area and also provide an overview of the history of organized drag racing in Atlanta. With full time jobs and families, Marv and I are pedaling as fast as we can! Keep checking GeorgiaDragRacing.com for news about our book.
