Review: Greer, Black, and Prudhomme by GMPReview: Greer, Black, and Prudhomme by GMP in 1:18 and 1:43 Scale. by Marvin T. Smith and David Dilbeck
Although not his first successful car, Don The Snake Prudhomme's reputation was firmly entrenched when he drove the Greer, Black, and Prudhomme fuel dragster from 1962 to 1964 (see Don Prudhomme). In 1963, a Schiefer advertisement in Drag News claimed that Greer, Black, and Prudhomme had lost only 7 out of 243 races. Although racing historian Chris Martin in his Top Fuel Handbook, has demonstrated that this claim was greatly exaggerated, no one would dispute that Greer, Black, and Prudhomme were the team to beat in southern California in the early sixties. GMP has produced authentic replicas of this historic car in both 1:18 and 1:43 scale. 1:18 Scale Greer, Black, and Prudhomme by GMP
The larger 1:18 scale version is an extremely detailed diecast replica. At ten inches long, it's a real handful. The full aluminum body wraps around a detailed tubular frame. It has all the usual ignition and fuel lines like many other quality diecasts, and the fuel line fittings are neatly painted.
But wait! How about the line to the oil pressure gauge and the line to the ignition kill switch? That's detail!
We're particularly impressed with GMP's authentic American mags. The finish looks like polished metal; not the glaring chrome plating of most models.
The front wheels have nice photo-etched metal spokes, and turn with the drag link. The cloth seat belts have metal buckles, and the parachute pack is also cloth. Paint finish is excellent.
This is a highly detailed replica which will be the highlight of any diecast collection of drag racing vehicles! Get it for $119.95. 1:43 Scale Greer, Black, and Prudhomme by GMP
The smaller 1:43 scale version is equally impressive in many ways. Although it lacks the full tubular frame detail of its larger sibling, the nose and cowl are removable revealing full fuel tank and fuel line detail in the nose, and driveline detail in the rear. There are also spark plug wires, and even a water overflow line to one of the headers. Again, I am very impressed by the wheel detail. The rear American mags even have valve stems -- amazing detail in this size. The front wheels are also photo-etched pieces. Measuring only four inches long, this is a real beauty. The paint and lettering are flawless. At $29.95, it is a great buy. Both of these cars come packed in extremely nice boxes with the cars carefully fitted to prevent any damage in shipping. Photos of the real car grace each box. The 1:18 scale car even comes with a nice hat pin! Rush down to GMP or your local dealer. Tell them that you saw it on GeorgiaDragRacing.com.
